Professor Yunqian Chen (Nanjing University): Sun Yat-sen Symbol Chinese National Identity

Abstract:

Sun Yat-sen is considered to be one of the greatest leaders of modern China. He had a significant impact on the social development of China, even after he died. His stature extended far beyond Chinese borders as indicated by the fact that he received funding from Chinese expatriates living in Canada. This talk will give a brief account of the process of how Sun Yat-sen gradually became a spiritual leader for the Chinese people and how it influences the identity and development of the Chinese nation.

Professor Yunqian Chen is the Assistant Dean of the Nanjing University Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS) and a professor in the Department of History. Her research fields include Modern Chinese History, Social Memory, New Culture History and Urban Space. Chen has published more than 50 papers in Chinese and Polish journals. Chen has published several books including Worship and Memory: The Construction and Dissemination of Sun Yat-sen Symbol, Memorial Space and Collective Memory about the Revolution of 1911.
